Eligibility Criteria:
We need to understand the eligibility criteria in two parts, General eligibility criteria which are applicable to all students, and course-specific eligibility criteria.
General eligibility requirements:
General Eligibility:
- Completed 12 years of schooling: You must have a recognized high school diploma or equivalent, such as the 10+2 certificate from India.
- Meet the minimum academic requirements: This varies depending on the program and university you’re applying to, but generally, a minimum percentage of 65-75% in your 12th-grade exams is expected.
- English language proficiency: You need to demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively in English. This can be done through standardized tests like IELTS (minimum score of 6.5 overall, with no band score below 6.0) or TOEFL (minimum score of 88). Some universities may also accept Duolingo English Test (DET) scores.
- Proof of sufficient funds: The minimum funds required for Indian students to show proof of financial support for obtaining a study permit in Canada changed on January 1, 2024.
Currently, you will need to demonstrate proof of funds for CAD 20,635 (Rs 12.84Lakhs approx) in addition to:
- Your first year’s tuition fees.
- Estimated travel costs.
Course-specific eligibility requirements:

- Engineering: The majority of engineering programs demand that applicants have completed a 12th-grade course in math, physics, and chemistry. Calculus coursework may also be necessary for some programs.
- Business Program: The majority of business programs necessitate that students have completed maths and economics in their 12th grade year. Additionally, some programs might demand that applicants have taken accounting or business administration courses.
- Computer science: The majority of computer science programs demand that applicants have completed physics and math in their twelfth grade. Students may also need to have taken software engineering or computer programming for some programs.
- Doctor of Medicine (MD): Must have completed the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (biology, science, or health sciences) with a minimum GPA of 3.5, and be proficient in English (minimum IELTS score of 7.0 or higher).
How Much Gap is Acceptable in Canada after Class 12th?
There is no such hard and fast rule on how much gap is acceptable for admission in Canada after class 12th. However, most universities and colleges will accept students with a gap of up to two years. If you have a gap of more than two years, you may need to explain your reasons for the gap in your application statement.
